Step inside a Melbourne milliner's studio

 Felicity Northeast Millinery blog

Often when we think of milliners we conjure up images of royalty, celebrities and models, sipping champagne track side whilst wearing sculptured pieces of art on their heads. The truth is milliners are not exclusive to a specific crowd and working with one should be anything but an intimidating experience. The right milliner has the ability to help you translate your outfit into a statement that tells a wonderful story.

Hats are enjoying a resurgence as a new generation of wearers take up the habit.  From one off bespoke pieces, to  ready to wear, head bands and fascinators, younger women are realising the benefits of investing in the expertise of a cleverly trained milliner.  Whether it be a desire to stand out amongst the crowd, create a particular piece to compliment an outfit in a specific colour or simply to understand the style that will work best for you a visit to a milliners studio is a must.

Inside my Mornington Peninsula millinery studio or  the Melbourne, Fitzroy showroom you will have the opportunity to play amongst the many existing beautiful hats and headpieces, and try on different shapes, sizes and colours whilst receiving expert millinery guidance.  For those who are in search of something specific, I’m able to provide you with an extensive collection of vintage trims, contemporary and sustainable materials to select from to help bring your millinery vision to life.

Melbourne Spring Carnival is an exceptionally busy time, so if you’re planning on going, it’s a great idea to make a booking in advance, even if you haven’t organised your outfit.  For those women or men interested in entering fashions on the field, a millinery consultation is an essential step in helping to design something unique and extraordinary but there are also some ready to wear options available on the website and if necessary slight alterations can be made to meet specific requirements.

During your appointment you will have the chance to discuss your budget and will be given a clear indication of the time frame for completion of your individual hat. Custom pieces are usually priced similar to ready-made hats on the website. Ideally a piece will take between 2-6 weeks to create, depending of course on the style and availability of the materials.  For those clients who have decided to design the outfit around the hat, fabric samples can be provided.

Appointment times are flexible and run for approximately 30 minutes.  To make the process smoother, it’s important to bring along any inspiration, clothing or accessories that you are considering pairing back with your hat to help me understand your personal vision.

If you can’t make it in person, that’s not a problem, I’m happy to schedule a video consultation or discuss the details over email.  Providing a picture of your face, head measurement, and image of your outfit, and of course the event you will be wearing it to, is more than enough information to create your perfect piece from a distance.  Shipping can be discussed and arranged if necessary.

Each hat is created with meticulous care and love with the intention of providing a luxurious product and enjoyable experience.  I look forward to making your next millinery appointment a memorable one.
